Depression & Anxiety:
Finding Your Balance

Depression lives in the past, anxiety lives in the future, but healing happens in the present. We are here to help you find your way back to now.

Defining Anxiety

The Anticipatory

"Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom; the intense fear of what *might* happen in the future."

The Physiological

"It is the body's internal alarm system stuck in the 'on' position, flooding the system with adrenaline."

The Cognitive

"A persistent, uncontrollable loop of 'what-ifs' and catastrophic thinking that distorts reality."

The Weight and The Buzz

Imagine waking up wearing a vest made of lead—that is the weight of depression. It makes getting out of bed feel like climbing a mountain.

Now, imagine that while you are carrying this weight, a swarm of bees is buzzing around your head, whispering worries about everything you haven't done. That is the buzz of anxiety.

Coping Techniques

The 5-4-3-2-1 Method

Ground yourself by identifying: 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.

Box Breathing

Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds. This physically slows down your heart rate.

Cognitive Reframing

Challenge the "what ifs." Ask yourself: "What evidence do I have for this?" and "What would I tell a friend in this situation?"

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you have depression and anxiety at the same time?
Yes. In fact, nearly 50% of people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
Is anxiety just being stressed?
No. Stress is a response to a threat. Anxiety is a reaction to the stress that persists even after the threat is gone.
